Build Your Mailing List

First, a word about adding your email address and URL to your website. 

There are some rotten people out there that do nothing all day long except try to figure out how to make you life as miserable as possible. These people have created 'robots' that will search websites for urls and email addresses. Once they collect your information, they will start using your domain to send out spam.

These robots will send out spam email from anything@yourdomain.com. It will look like it came from you. The recipients of these emails will report you as a spammer and your domain will get blocked by most isps. There goes your list. No one can get your emails messages cause no isp will allow delivery of these emails and you did nothing wrong.

The solution... Make sure you use spaces in your domain name where ever you list it on your site. Like this --> www. knowitalltraffic .com. Also list your email address like this webmaster [@] knowitalltraffic .com. THIS IS IMPORTANT!  Don't overlook it.

Building Your Mailing List:

No matter what you do to drive traffic to your site, your main objective should always be getting them to join your list. No Matter What! If you don't get their name and email address, you have wasted your time.

The first time someone enters your website, they should go directly to your sign-up page. This will always be the page you will try to generate your traffic to. It probably won't be your home page of your site. When you are advertising your site anywhere, use the url to your sign-up page as the link for your advertisement. <-- ALWAYS!!!

I know I didn't bring you into this site through my sign-up page. This is one of those rare occasions where showing you my site first will make you want to join my list more than the freebies. The fact is, you will benefit far more from joining my list than I will from having you on my list. Why? I am not going to try to sell you anything on this list. I am going to give you updates for traffic generation techniques. If you would prefer to wander aimlessly in the dark rather than give me your email address, the choice is yours.

It is also a good idea to remove all other links to other pages from your sign-up page. They have to join your list or they will not be able to enter your site. Of course they will be able to figure out what the main page of the site is by looking at the web address but I have to tell you, most people will not do this. They will join your list to see what is on your site if you make the sign-up page interesting enough for them to want more.

To offer a gift or not...

There is a lot of controversy about offering gifts as enticement to get someone to join your list. The argument is, if you offer a freebie in exchange for their email address, you are going to get a bunch of freebie seekers on your list that will never buy anything.

Maybe this is true, it does make sense. If you can write a compelling enough sales letter to sell your website, sight unseen, to get people to join without the gift, I say go for it. If you don't think you will get sign-ups without the gift, offer a freebie. It's not costing you any more to give the same ebook away 10 times or 10,000 times.

Test two different pages and direct half your traffic to one and half to the other. See where you get the most sign-ups and go with that one.

If you do get a bunch of freebie seekers, they won't stick around once they stop getting freebies. It will all even out eventually.

What do I do? I use freebies on about 80% of my lists. Different sites warrant different techniques. Figure out what works for you. When in doubt, give a gift.
